God at Work in Kazakhstan

Greetings from Beijing,                                                                                            August 2019

We’ve had a great summer of ministry and family time. Our whole tribe gathered for the first time ever in Portland, Oregon. Happy days with sons Nathan (wife Heather), Josiah, and Aaron, and grandkids Maylee, Kekoa, and Makana…who all met for the first time! Then we shared some days with family and friends in California with Maylee on her first visit there. We praise the Lord for His faithful blessings on us and our family. We are so thankful for the support and prayers we have received these many years!

Our eldest son Nathan recently became a Project Manager for the Bible Project in Portland. If you have not enjoyed their cool videos, stimulating podcasts and teachings, and even magazine, we’d urge you and your church to check out them out. Free! Last Saturday we had the joy of showing an Uzbek pastor and his family the videos in Russian…now in 12 languages, 12 more in process!  www.thebibleproject.com

We just returned to Beijing from Almaty, Kazakhstan. We took Maylee back home and reunited with friends and colleagues from our years of service there, 1998-2009 – preaching in the International Fellowship where we pastored and joining a conference of graduates from the seminary where we served. We were humbled by their kind recognition of our service in helping to equipping leaders for the Church in Central Asia. They continue to faithfully serve the nations there despite opposition from the authorities.

Now we’re beginning our tenth Fall season in Beijing International Christian Fellowship Zhongguancun. Tens of thousands of international students, some of the brightest and most gifted from more than 100 nations, will soon be our new neighbors. Some who come are Christians that wondering if there will be any church for them. Some do not carry their Bibles for fear they’ll be confiscated upon arrival! How glad they are to find and connect with our vibrant congregation. Some are ‘Christians’ by culture or family pressure and they are eager to move miles away from the gaze of pastors and parents. Some of them will come on their first Sunday in China, taking selfies of themselves in church to post home! We will likely see some of them again on ‘graduation Sunday’….or when they get pregnant or in trouble! Hundreds of students come with other faiths or no faith. Entering into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ is not even on their radar. But they do want to make friends, better understand how to get connected to this huge and daunting city, and find ‘community.’ We will cross paths with many of them, in our ‘Welcome to Beijing’ seminar, small groups on about 30 campuses, sports or social outings, or even a Sunday service. Pray for us preachers to be faithful to the texts of Ecclesiastes in the morning and Revelation in the evenings. Pray that His sheep will hear His voice through us His servants here - and find and follow Him! Thank God for the faithful members/students in our church who continue to love and welcome new folks year after year. It can be hard to open your heart when you know that in just a couple short years you will be saying a painful good-bye to someone moving back to other side of the globe! But when they are ‘family’ heading off to serve our Father we know we will meet again.

I will be spending the first part of our ‘Fall push’ recuperating. TOMORROW I will have my prostrate removed at a hospital here in Beijing. They have found early stage prostate cancer. I am grateful for a skilled surgeon here and even more for the Great Physician who has taken me through two other cancers. (No signs of thyroid or testicular cancers from 2007…I just seem cancer prone!...Still trying to work this one into the alliteration…neck to nuts to…?...) I hope to be an active member of the ministry team again in September, God willing. I am so thankful for Dayna’s care and even Josiah who is here with us now.

Two other big things we need prayer for…

Our church must move by the first Sunday of October. We’ve had a great 6 years in a strategically located hotel, but they are returning to their original focus as a government training center. We have some options but still need wisdom and clarity.

Our work visa expires October 5. It has been renewed every year for the last decade, and we trust God will give us another year. We hope so! But it does get harder after 60. Long ago the Beatles wondered where they’d be “when I’m 64…?” Beijing we hope!

In life, ministry, future, all things, we are reminded and rejoicing that Jesus is Lord! We bow before Him in full trust!
Your prayers. Support, and encouragement have been a wellspring of great blessing to us and our family!
“Thanks” seem so little, but we send them with love and sincerity,
Mark and Dayna Blair

Graduation Season

Warm Greetings from Beijing!                                                                            July 2019

It is a season of rejoicing in God’s blessings. Thousands of graduates have now ‘walked’ in the 82 Universities that surround our Beijing International Christian Fellowship. Dayna has been making lots of leis! Here we are with 2 of our ‘beloved daughters’ – Keren from Ghana earned her Master’s Degree and Ruth from Uganda her Ph.D. Both have been faithful Deaconesses in our church. With our church motto of “Gathering, Growing, Going” we now face the sad “G,” saying good-bye to may who are going. We prefer ‘a hui hou!’ (See you again!). Below you can see over 50 key members of the congregation who stood for a farewell prayer last Sunday. We are truly a ‘sending’ church!
This Spring we’ve had many opportunities to reach the 80,000 International students around our church.

The night before our “mini-Olympics” we hosted “The World’s Got Talent.” Students from our church and beyond were invited to share their talent as we enjoyed a Chinese buffet dinner in a nice dining room of a large University near our church location. The owner was happy to make money but nervous about “church” so he urged us not to “preach.” That all went fine for the first few minutes until a dance troupe from Kenya who had most of the house jumping up and down singing wanted to declare Who they

danced for.

Soon most people were shouting and waving their hands for “Jesus…I praise you…I love you…I serve you!!” Well, no one did PREACH…technically. But the Lord did organize a winsome and natural way of letting a room full of students from many nations and faiths know that He is alive and well. Lots of talent! There was a 1st place tie between Samoan men dancers and a Zimbabwean opera singer!

That same weekend we encouraged people to wear clothes from their homelands to church on Sunday morning. What a radiant display of colors and cultures! Just a foretaste of that Grand Day when the nations will present their offerings and praise to the Lord God Almighty and to the Lamb.
We’re especially thankful for the opportunities to equip our congregation this year. Our “Joshua Training Centre” has offered a day-long course every month. Each time more than 100 people have taken the courses on Bible Interpretation, Ethics, Missions, and Apologetics. Next week Mark will teach the last course of this academic year on “How to Teach the Book of Revelation.” Thanks for your prayers that not only will people learn more about this great book of hope in Jesus, but know how to share it with others.

More than ever we are hearing testimonies about the ‘readiness’ of our members to return home, or wherever the Lord is leading them to serve – especially in helping people grow in their knowledge and handling of Scripture. We also have had weekly training for the Bible teachers of our small groups this year – now over 30 groups meet on different campuses weekly!

The Lord continues to open doors of friendship with the Haidian Christian Church. This ‘Three-Self’ church is our nearest neighbor. Here we are visiting with Rachel who leads the English service on a recent Sunday when they invited Mark to preach. They are preaching through the Book of Acts. One Chinese lady who said she was a Communist Party member told me afterwards that my sermon had much to say about ‘current affairs’ and I simply said, “oh, really, I was just trying to faithfully interpret and apply the Scriptures.” That’s my job!

Health News – We both had physical exams recently and checked out pretty good for 2 active people in their mid-sixties! We feel good! We do ask for prayer as Mark was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It is early stages, and still contained. We are exploring options, considering surgery at the end of August. God has graciously seen us through cancer before, we trust Him again for this next adventure.

Our last letter was sent just before “Celebration Mama’s” in May– where we recognized 12 new moms in our church (10 births, 2 adoptions!). Well it was a great time. With food, fun, friends, and even crowns and leis! Since then we have met four new babies, three boys and one girl…more on the way!

It was a joy to see three men from BICF, including the pastors of our Mandarin and Korean congregations, be ordained to the ministry in June. We organized an Examining Council of pastors from BICF and other churches in the city. We unanimously recommended they be ordained. It was a great day!

This Spring we hosted two nights of the “Alpha” Pre-Marriage course in our apartment again. Ten couples came for the five-week session enjoying good teaching and Dayna’s good cooking!
Then, after Pre-Marriage class, wedding bells are ringing….!

Briefly Noted: BICF Staff Retreat! And a “Leaving China Well” seminar was much appreciated.

Hope you have enjoyed this long slice of life from the last couple months here in Beijing. We are very privileged to be able to serve the Lord in this dynamic city at this strategic time.

Your faithful prayers and support and much appreciated and needed. We praise the Lord for so many years of this Gospel partnership.

As you pray, please ask the Lord to open a new door for our church. The hotel we have rented weekly for the last six years is changing their business strategy, reverting to a state-owned training center. We are encouraged by the support and encouragement of the government officials who continue to sanction our church and have even assisted in our new search. The door of opportunity seems to be open, we just need to find out where!

We are looking forward to a couple weeks with family in Oregon and California this summer. Josiah is now visiting Kazakhstan and will bring Maylee and we plan to meet all together in Portland. The first time With all our sons, daughter in law, and three grandkids! God is so good.

Joyfully Serving the Lord of the Global Harvest with you, Mark and Dayna Blair

Easter 2.0

Warm Springtime Greetings from Beijing!                                                                May 2019

We are sorry that it has been hard to stop long enough to send out this update. We are so thankful for your faithful prayers and support for us here in China. We have a daily appreciation for the mercy and grace of our Lord God who continues to strengthen and sustain us in this changing religious landscape.

Easter 2.0
We were privileged to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus two Sundays in a row. April 21 we had a great celebration in Beijing International Christian Fellowship Zhongguancun – our 10th Easter here!     April 28th we celebrated Easter – according to the Orthodox calendar – with the International Fellowship in Almaty, Kazakhstan – where we served for the previous ten years.
This year in Beijing we had 3 Easter Sunday services! We also had a special prayer meeting, Children’s program, and Easter lunch for 200 in the dining hall of a nearby University. We also had the great joy of witnessing two people confess their faith in Baptism!

Here is our 2019 Good Friday Team – 7 speakers (sharing the words of Jesus from the cross) and 2 musicians from USA, England, Burundi, China, and Uganda.

ZGC Bible Week 2019

A Hui Hou, Johnny! (see you again!)
The certain hope of our own resurrection in Jesus has been brought closer through the confidence of the man who introduced us. John Svendsen, who taught me how to follow Jesus for almost 50 years,
showed us how to enter heaven with joyful hope on Palm Sunday. Over the years John has visited us in Kazakhstan and China to share the Lord and His Word with the people we have served.

Last year John was our teacher for our Chinese New Year Bible week. This year Mark had the privilege of leading our fifth annual gathering. Just over 50 students came from 3 cities in China for five mornings to study “Romans: Great News from Rome to the Ends of the Earth.” So many, even Christians, think there is something we do to merit or maintain our relationship with God. It was a great joy to see people’s eyes light up with grateful wonder that there is indeed “no condemnation to those who are in Christ” (8.1). And studying with people from a couple dozen nations is a great reminder that the Gospel is for all peoples.

After Chinese New Year we began an expository sermon series through 2 Corinthians on Sunday mornings. It has been one of my favorite Bible books for a long time, but this is my first time to preach through it! What a blessing to learn ministry from the Apostle Paul!

Growing Kingdom Leaders in Several Languages
Last time we shared we have a new pastor for our ZGC Korean congregation. He is doing very well. He, and two other men, are currently preparing for Ordination to the Christian ministry by the BICF. Pastor Steven attended the Bible week and has now asked Mark to teach through Romans one afternoon a week for about 20 young leaders from their congregation. After graduating from Uni here, they each went home and raised support in Korea, and have now returned to focus on reaching international students in this huge harvest field. Most of them are now doing Masters or Ph.D. as a visa/residence platform and friendship builder.

Life for Central Asia
During our week in Kazakhstan we caught up with our friend John Ensor, President of Passion Life. (Take a look at their great free Gospel resources and global impact at www.passionlife.org ). This was John’s third trip to Central Asia. About two years ago we had the privilege of introducing John to church and pro-life ministry leaders there. They keep inviting him back for his clear message of how to apply the grace for the Gospel to the guilt of abortion. What a joy to pop in on John’s last day of teaching key church leaders in Almaty. About one third of these leaders were once our students in the seminary where we both taught. Now they continue faithfully making Jesus known.

It was a special joy to hear the pastors share their reflections on John’s seminar. One who came from Tajikistan tearfully confessed that, even as pastor, he asked his wife to have an abortion when he learned his wife was pregnant with their daughter (the first girl after four boys!). She refused and they now have a beautiful girl. But the pain of his “wish” damaged his relationship with both wife and daughter – now a teenager. After John’s first day of teaching he tearfully called home to apologize to both wife and daughter. His phone buzzed through the next 2 days as they texted messages of love and affirmation across Central Asia.

A pastor from Taraz, Kazakhstan told how he and his wife resisted the pressures of family and physicians to abort their third child who was severely handicapped. Indeed, their daughter has been born with many challenges and may not live long. Yet, he said how this gift from God has been the hardest and best thing for their family, church, and wider community. What a powerful moment as brother pastors affirmed him with tears, hugs, and conviction to honor God and the life He gives even amidst the strong message of death in our society. It was also a reminder that the local church is God’s family for us to bear one another’s burdens which can, by ourselves, be almost overwhelming.
We took this picture with dear friends and colleagues for many years  just before John and team left for another teaching conference in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Even more New Life…
We have ten sisters with child, and two pending adoptions, in our church! So ‘Mama Dayna’ and a team of sisters have planned a great party for them all this Sunday afternoon - ‘Celebration Mama’s’ for them and our soon to be newest church members from Kenya, China, England, Malawi, Nigeria, USA, and India.

Asia Missions Advance
The Asia Missions Association devoted their January 2019 issue of Asia Missions Advance to the challenge of reaching international students. “AMA promote partnership and cooperation among the people of God from Asian countries for the advancement of the Kingdom of God. AMA seeks to help every Asian national church actively participate in the Mission of God.” They asked Mark to write about the opportunities we have in Beijing… http://www.asiamissions.net/looking-for-gospel-laborers-dont-forget-the-university/

With Great Thanks for your Prayers and Support for our Family! In our Risen Lord,                                                                                                                              Mark and Dayna Blair

Jesus Christ - Hope of the World

Christmas Greetings!                                                                December 2018
Despite what you may have heard, this month we in Beijing International Christian Fellowship did what Christians have been doing all over the world for the last 2000 years – rejoiced in Emmanuel!
We had the privilege of sharing the Good News of His coming with all people for the 8th year in the Haidian Church. We are very thankful for the welcome and Gospel-partnership we enjoy with the brothers and sisters of this church.
For 2 nights in Dececmber the Lord filled their sanctuary with more than 1500 people as we declared our hope in Jesus through song, dance, drama, and proclamation.

Now that we have almost 30 Small Groups in our church, spread across many of the Universities in our part of the city, December is packed with Christmas outreaches and parties. Several groups decided to give popcorn to all the International students in their dorms. Lots of popping and packing! Then followed by lots of surprised smiles and words of appreciation for their random kindness in Christ’s name. Who doesn’t need a study break to enjoy some popcorn…and a Christmas card with some Great News!?

It was our privilege to enjoy dinner with this small group and their friends. We met in a ‘Halal’ Muslim restaurant near their campus. We enjoyed a great meal, sang Christmas carols, exchanged ‘white elephant’ gifts, and Mark was asked to share a brief Gospel message. Less than 25% of the students pictured above are members of the small group…so far! You can see that their friends had a lot of fun and are quite open!

Closed Doors can Open More
Our BICF ZGC Korean pastor had his visa revoked about a month ago. So, we suddenly had to organize Pastor John’s (in black coat, wearing a lei from Dayna) farewell/commissioning and Pastor Steven’s (blue tie, next to John) appointment. God has been preparing Steven through five years of serving with John.

Pastor John was here to welcome us to BICF ZGC, serving for over a decade. So, it was hard to say good-bye. But he continued to be a wonderful example and encouragement in Christ right to his final benediction. He enthusiastically told us to trust God who both closes and opens doors in the advance of His Kingdom. Pray for John and his family in their next steps of service and Steven and family in their new role.

We stepped up our game this Thanksgiving. We found a larger venue and a better menu! Over 200 happy eaters seemed to think it was a good move. Lots of students brought their seeking friends, pray for them!

Thanks for praying for our travels to Jinan, China in early November. We had the privilege meeting with 150 students from 33 cities in China who were chosen to participate in a Leadership Conference. They lead Small Groups on University campuses all around the nation, reaching their classmates with the Great News. Mark was asked to be their Speaker and shared “Lessons on Leadership: Paul’s Letter to Titus.” We learned together and from one another. Their testimonies of endurance and obedience were humbling and invigorating. Some groups are now forced to meet in dormitory stairwells! But they vowed to press on!

Christmas Sunday

We had our normal 11 am and 6 pm services on December 23. Members worked hard to present a great program of dance, drama, music, and preaching from Luke 2. The Advent reading was presented in languages from the Pacific (Samoan, Hawaiian, and Tongan – with English translation on the PPT screen) and songs were sung in English, Portuguese, French, and Swahili! Jesus truly is Savior of the whole world!

After morning service many of us went to our new favorite all-church lunch spot. Lots of people were saying the meal even topped Thanksgiving! So, like people all around the world, we ate too much. But we were well-fueled for stepping back into the cold for Christmas caroling! And, like last year, we were invited inside our shopping mall, onto their center stage….!
Our newest ZGC ministry is called Joshua Training. The title was coined in hope that men and women will be better equipped for service through the message of the Word and mentoring in their walk and witness. We feel responsible to take even more advantage of the opportunity we have to equip student/leaders from around the world. We want to be more intentional in helping them be ready to serve their churches, even plant new churches, in the places God will lead them with the impressive academic credentials they earn here in Beijing.  Given the busy schedules of folks in Beijing, we are trying to find the right balance of how much time to require for this program. The current schedule is one day a month. Courses are offered all day on a Saturday or two Sunday afternoons. People can choose what works best. So far, we have had more than 100 ZGC members taking each of our Joshua classes. Mark will be part of the teaching team for the January course on “Ecclesiology: The Church”
We’re blessed to have our son Josiah with us these holidays. As we wrote, he has left Kazakahstan and has been looking at job opportunities here in China, and beyond. Thanks for praying for him. We had the best Christmas dinner right outta Dayna’s kitchen! Several friends came to share! Rejoice! Emmanuel has come!

Christ is Here, Christ will Come Again! and Happy New Year! Mark and Dayna Blair
