Coming to California

Blue Sky Greetings from Beijing!
We are looking forward to being with our family in Oregon tomorrow. We are very thankful for the opportunity to see our grandson Kekoa, his parents Nathan and Heather, and our son Aaron. Josiah plans to come from Kazakhstan later in the summer. God is so good!

We have been busy with lots of good things here. Mark joined with the BICF Elders in ordaining one of our pastors for a life of Gospel ministry. Dayna made leis for Pastor Favour, his wife Helen, and their children. They have faithfully served the African Outreach Ministry of BICF for over 8 years. They came here from Nigeria as students, married, had children, earned a Ph.D. and now pastor a church in China!

Dayna led 33 ladies from our congregation to join in the BICF Women’s Retreat. Together more than 80 had a great time of fellowship and friendship

Last night we had bitter-sweet good-byes with a handful of dear students and colleagues in the Gospel on our rooftop. A dozen graduates who are part of our Africa Connect Ministry came for a meal and fellowship. It was touching to hear how the Lord has used our church in their walk and now how they’re ready to go home and serve in local churches, business, education, and government. Two sisters were just baptized in our service this morning, one from California and one from Philippines. Your prayers and gifts for us are having a profound global impact.

As you can see below, we will have a busy summer of visiting churches in California, and one in Pennsylvania. It would be a great help to borrow a reliable car in California, if anyone has one available.

Greetings from Thailand

Greetings from Bangkok,

We are glad to have this chance to share the good things the Lord is doing in China and beyond. In about one month we will fly to USA to visit family and our churches in California. If you are there, please contact us so we can plan a visit. We hope to hear from you soon. We so appreciate your support and are eager to share with you.

We are here in Thailand for a couple days attending the Missional International Church Network conference (www.micn.org). We are with colleagues from 25 International

churches scattered around the world. Mark led a workshop on Developing Leaders. Sunday we will share in a church pastored by a brother who was an Elder in our church in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Monday we will be back home in Beijing for a busy month of ministry.

He is Risen, Indeed!

We had over 650 gather to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord on Easter morning worship at Beijing International Christian Fellowship Zhonggancun. (Our normal morning attendance is about 350.) Thankfully most of our visitors are friends, colleagues, neighbors, classmates, and even students of our members. Pray for these ongoing Gospel relationships. Four young ladies – from Kenya, Samoa, Panama, and China – professed their faith through Baptism on Easter Sunday. It was a great joy to hear their stories of coming to faith in Jesus.

Global Diaspora Forum

In April we joined with 300 Christian leaders from around the world in Manila. Our focus was on the 300 million people who live outside their homelands – the global diaspora. Many are forced from home by war or calamity, others choose to leave seeking fortune or advancement. Their conditions are vastly different, but their

common denominator is that if they do not know Jesus Christ they will never find a home with God. So the Lausanne Movement called this Global Diaspora Forum to consider how to reach them with the love of God in word and deed. We spent long hours reviewing articles that we read in advance examining this complex issue from many perspectives. The plan is that this compendium will be published to provide a useful text for ministry leaders and students. Pray for the several dozen authors as they reflect on the critique they received at GDF and consider how to revise their work.

International Students

For two days before the opening of GDF we joined with leaders of International student ministries from Asia, Africa, and North America. We were hosted by leaders

from the Philippines who provided a great venue for us to learn from one another. It was humbling and encouraging to hear some great affirmation from these key leaders about what the Lord is doing in our church in Beijing among International students.

Tacloban Pastor’s Conference

After the GDF we flew from Manila to Tacloban, Philippines. Here we witnessed the devastation that Super-Typhoon Yolanda brought to this area just over a year ago. The exact number of deaths from Yolanda is uncertain. People were buried faster than

could be properly counted, but it was in the thousands. Some homes remained inundated with water for over a month! We saw several churches that special offerings taken last year in the BICF helped rebuild. We stood on the famed shoreline of Leyte where General Douglas MacArthur departed – and returned! – during WW2. We met

with over 200 church leaders – and young people who were off school for Holy Week - who soldier faithfully for King Jesus there. These brothers in sisters in Christ who had lost much are not bitter. No, they are grateful for God’s gifts of life. It was our privilege to be encouraged by them! We had the joy of sharing from the Scriptures, urging them to press on in the work of the Gospel.

The Next Generation of Preachers

For two long weekends in April Mark led a class on “Sermon Preparation” for the BICF Seminary. A dozen students from Malaysia, USA, Liberia, Hong Kong, Philippines, Nigeria, England, and Gabon - young and eager preachers, gathered to sharpen their skills. We had a lot of good sharing and discussion. Each of them presented Bible messages that they had crafted and openly received critique from their colleagues. Iron was sharpening iron, buffered by love and encouragement.

So, we give praise to God for all He’s doing by your prayers and faithful support. We do hope to see many of you soon.

Happy New Year from Beijing!

Happy Chinese New Year from Beijing!

We are rejoicing in God’s blessings upon our life and ministry. This new season has brought new opportunities for ministry. We join with the millions of Chinese Christians who are praying this New Year of “the sheep” will be a year of great advance for the “Lamb of God.” Thanks so much for faithfully supporting and praying for us.

Family Blessings

While our granddaughter Maylee was celebrating her 11th birthday in Kazakhstan, our first grandson was born in Portland, Oregon. Here are Nathan and Heather with their son Kekoapomaika’i Frederick Lee Blair.  Because of the time differences, Kekoa’s birthday is January 24 and Maylee’s is the 25th.  Our new grandson’s name means ‘blessed warrior’ and our prayer is that he will be all that for Jesus Christ our King!

ZGC Bible Week

Chinese New Year brings a month of travel for hundreds of millions of people in this nation. Businesses and schools close as citizens try their best to get home for this most important holiday. The café that houses our church office closed for a week. So we got permission to turn it into the classroom for our first ZGC Bible Week with daily teaching through Paul’s pastoral letters. It was a privilege to grow in the Word with leaders from Uganda, Samoa, Peru, Mexico, Holland, Philippines, Madagascar, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, China, and the USA.

Spring Planting

Since 90% of our members are linked to the over 80 Universities around us, we must reach out afresh at the beginning of each semester! 100,000 International students, many who have never heard the Good News of Jesus Christ, are our neighbors here – a million Chinese students! We are blessed to have a gifted team of young leaders who serve faithfully in many areas of ministry. There are many great International student ministries, but many are not integrally linked to a local church. And even fewer have the students themselves serving in all areas of church leadership and ministry. Our goal of “Gathering, Growing, and Going” is being lived out as the Lord gives us several years to disciple young leaders and then bless them as they return to their homelands around the world.

Tuesday Training

We have just begun a series of weekly ministry training courses. Many of our members who are pursuing degrees in various disciplines want to also receive biblical and theological knowledge for years of ministry ahead of them. So, we are gathering a team of good teachers to offer courses this spring on Biblical Counseling, Hermeneutics, Doctrine of Salvation, and the Gospel of John.  We had 51 students turn up for our first class!

Global Diaspora Forum

This month we will be going to the Philippines. Our primary purpose will be to participate in the Lausanne Global Diaspora Forum: http://www.globaldiaspora.net/gdf/  The focus is to consider how to share Jesus Christ with 253 million people in our world who are away from their homelands. Millions have been ripped away from home by war and terror. Millions have chosen to leave for work and study. We have been invited to attend GDF because of our unique church-based ministry with International students the Lord has raised up in Beijing.

Following GDF we will go to Tacloban and lead a pastor’s conference in the area hit by Supertyphoon HAIYAN (Yolanda) in late 2013 - the strongest in recorded history.  Thousands of people died, tens of thousands were displaced, and over 100 churches were greatly damaged or destroyed. BICF has been helping to rebuild churches materially and spiritually, this will be our second leader’s conference there. We are expecting 150-200 leaders to come. We will be there the first part of Holy Week (the biggest holiday in the Philippines!) and it will be a privilege to share with pastors about preaching the Cross and Resurrection.

Sisters to Sisters

Dayna has helped launch a new Women’s ministry in our church. “Sisters to Sisters” is a monthly Sunday afternoon meeting that is a catalyst to lots of smaller fellowships and mentoring among women. With so many young 20 something women in our fellowship, all far from their mom’s and auntie’s back home, they have really appreciated the prayers, encouragement, and advice of their “older sisters.”

One More Grandparents Brag…

Please indulge us one more boast! Maylee, our granddaughter, is the 4th fastest skier in her age bracket (11 to 13) in Kazakhstan – she is 11. We are thankful for her other grandpa’s kind and enthusiastic support to help her with the costs and training for this sport she has been enjoying since age 8. Almaty is vying to hold the Winter Olympics in 2020 and you can thus connect the dots of their – and our – enthusiasm.  We could never have scripted this life of adventure and blessing the Lord has given us in His service!

We are very thankful for your prayers and support these many years. We praise the Lord for bringing us to a place of great fruitfulness in this season of serving Him. We plan to visit California this summer. Please let us know what might be some good times to visit with you.

Holiday Report

Advent Greetings from Beijing!

Bright sun shines into our festive apartment on this cold winter day. Dayna has put up Christmas decorations we’ve collected over the years and miles. A couple weeks ago the “Winter” switch was turned on HIGH here. Thankfully, strong winds (which make the cold bite harder!) have kept our air clean on many days.

We’ve had a very busy “Fall push.” We are now doing life with dozens of new students, teachers, and families who have become part of our congregation at Beijing International Christian Fellowship Zhongguancun this autumn.

China International Fellowships

In October Mark was one of the speakers for the China International Fellowships conference in Guangzhou, China. CIF is an annual gathering of leaders of International Fellowships from around this country. Each one has a similar understanding of our unique challenges and opportunities in IF’s. Many of us came to China wondering if we’d even find a church. Whodathunk we’d find vibrant churches that can freely share the Good News of Jesus in the world’s most populous nation!

There were 3 tracks to CIF – pastoral, worship, and youth and children. Mark led a workshop on “Developing and Sending Out New Leaders” in the pastoral track.

Wedding Bells

Our whole church rallied to make a beautiful wedding ceremony and celebration for our church Administrator. He and his fiancée are locals and were struggling with both the ethics and costs of the ‘traditional’ ceremony. When we asked our members to help they stepped up in dozens to practical ways (Dayna did many things, including the flowers!). Here is the “wedding crew” with the happy couple after the ceremony.

Seminary Classes

Over 2 weekends in November we team-taught a BICF Seminary class on “Basic Teaching Skills.” We had the privilege of sharing with young leaders from eight nations. They were both full-time and volunteer church workers. As we crunched the numbers we realized we have 90 years of experience in teaching between us. That does not mean we have done anything well, but at least it means we know a lot of ways to fail!

Mark just finished an 8 week class on “The Trinity” held in the Coffee Bean Tree restaurant. Years ago when C.S. Lewis proposed giving a series of lectures on The Trinity over the BBC many of his friends tried to discourage him, saying that was too complicated for the average Christian! Lewis’ friends were partly right. We’ll never fully understand our great Triune God, but as you can see here, there are many faithful believers who yearn to know Him better!

Thanksgiving Feast

About 200 gathered for our church family Thanksgiving meal. More than half the group were not Americans – so they had little idea that spaghetti, Korean beef, and bratwurst are not our normal holiday cuisine! (We celebrated in “Café Heaven” a restaurant owned by members of our Korean congregation.) Dayna’s pumpkin pies – Made in China – were thankfully enjoyed…with thick whipping cream! Best of all it was a time for people far from home to gather with new friends. Many who do not know Jesus yet joined in as we sang, “Give Thanks with a grateful heart…!”

People you are Impacting

As we do each semester, we have membership / discipleship classes after our morning worship services. It is a special joy to lead these classes with my fellow Elders to hear wonderful testimonies.

These are just a few of the people your prayers and support are helping us to serve. True stories, with pseudonyms:

Brian is a young Englishman who was raised Baha’i and sent on a spiritual pilgrimage to the Holy Land at 14! That trip convinced him Baha’i was not the right way but not sure if there was any right way. The rest of his teenage years he was addicted to pornography and rock music, composing almost 10,000 of his own tunes! Just over a year ago Brian was challenged to consider claims of Jesus and read the New Testament. At the same time his brother went to study in USA and became a Christian. When the brothers reunited, both believed in Jesus!

Jose is a Mexican whose father is a faithful evangelical pastor. He grew up in a loving home where they loyally went to church. But coming to Beijing 5 years ago was when Jose made his own decision to follow Jesus. Now he leads our Spanish ministry.

Andrew’s parents immigrated to London from Ghana. His Mom was Roman Catholic; Dad was Muslim who became a Methodist. Then Mom began attending a Pentecostal church in London and brought the whole family who heard and believed the Gospel.

Thomas was raised in China and had never heard the Gospel or met a Christian. As a Uni student he went on a 2 week study trip to Hong Kong and met a girl from his village who was a new follower of Jesus. She took him to church, 4 times in 2 weeks. He returned home, a new believer with his Bible, but never found any fellowship. When he got a scholarship to do a Master’s degree in Amsterdam he knew he’d need Christian friends to keep him from moral failure! He found a good church and has become a disciple of the Master with a Master’s degree. Now, a husband and father of a baby girl, he works in a tech company near where our church meets.
Robert is a Filipino in his 2nd year of Uni, now doing a semester of Mandarin in Beijing. Four years ago he became the first Christian in his Buddhist family. When he is in school he can attend student fellowship groups, but his parents will not allow him to attend church when he is home. His first Sunday in Beijing he found us, and has not missed yet. Now we are praying with Robert for his family to meet Jesus! And we have another two months to disciple him here.

Sally is a vibrant Christian from Brazil who is in Beijing to learn Mandarin. She just “happens” to be sitting next to a North Korean young man during her long days of classes. (China is one of NK’s few allies and there are many of their students here.) Usually NK students are in groups who “keep an eye” on each other. But this young man, without any of his country mates watching, finds himself next to a young lady whose mission is to tell him something new about Jesus every day! At first, he firmly but politely gave her the “party line” atheist responses. But now he initiates the conversations asking more and more questions!

It has been our observation, after living for 16 years in lands where atheist ideology has been imposed; this creates great Gospel-curiosity. Just like railing against exciting-sounding-sins can arouse sinful appetites, this “God who does not exist” just might be worth checking out!

“Joy to the World” Celebration

Last weekend was our 4th annual International Christmas concert in the venue of the Haidian Christian Church, a large Three Self church that seats over 1000 people. It was standing room only on both nights! Pacific Islanders, Koreans, Africans, Mandarin, Americans, Indonesians, and the Haidian Church choir shared songs and skits of the holiday. Mark was asked to present 2 short messages, “Who is Jesus?” and “What did Jesus do?” – 2 exceedingly important questions. Our people brought their classmates, students, neighbors, and friends. Many heard the Good News for the first time! You can see pictures and read an article (in Mandarin) on the church’s website: http://www.hdchurch.org/news/9990

We pray that you and your family will have a wonderful Christmas. We are going to miss our families this year, but we are thankful for the church family we have here in China.
In a recently letter we bragged on our son, Josiah, who was interviewed on the TV show “Connecting Cultures” in Kazakhstan, well now they’ve made him their host!  http://kazakh-tv.kz/en/programms/program/program_597_connecting-cultures

Please pray for the newest Blair. Our eldest son, Nathan, and his wife Heather, are expecting their first in late January!

We are very grateful for your faithful prayers for our whole family, support, and friendship!
